Climate Change Targets
YKF has identified short and long-term targets to reduce our carbon footprint:
- Short-Term – reduce 2035 Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per passenger by 35% from 2023 levels.
- Long-Term – achieve Net Zero Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2050, in alignment with the Region of Waterloo’s Corporate Climate Action Plan.
During this period of growth and expansion, YKF has also established several short-term commitments to:
- Measure and report our carbon footprint annually through the Airport Carbon Accreditation program.
- Ensure all new Region buildings are net-zero, including a future terminal building. Design and planning for a future terminal building will include on-site renewable energy production.
- Switch four gasoline vehicles to market-ready zero-emissions vehicles by 2031 and install charging infrastructure to support the Region’s and public’s needs.
- Achieve 15% reduction in emissions generated from natural gas and electricity consumption by 2035 through investment in energy efficiency upgrades in airport-owned buildings.
- Becoming a leader in supporting sustainable aviation by 2030 through partnerships with the Waterloo Institute of Sustainable Aviation (WISA) and exploring the use of hydrogen.
