The Region of Waterloo International Airport Set a New Passenger Record in 2015

Waterloo Region  For the fourth year in a row, passenger traffic at the Region of Waterloo International Airport has increased, making 2015 the busiest year ever on record.

Airport traffic is measured in two ways: passenger numbers and aircraft movements. Between January 1 and December 31 2015, 153,963 passengers travelled through the airport’s Terminal Building, a 5.8 per cent increase over 2014. There were also 102,173 aircraft movements, a take-off or landing reported in 2015, a 6.2 per cent increase over the previous year.

“The numbers clearly show that air service is important to our community,” said Regional Chair Ken Seiling. “It is very exciting to see the increase in passenger traffic at the airport and we are working hard to add even more destinations to our schedule. We want to thank passengers for their continued support, our airline partners for connecting our community to the world and the many private and corporate aircraft that use our Airport.”

Daily scheduled service on American Airlines to Chicago and WestJet to Calgary continue to grow.  Seasonal weekly service with WestJet to Orlando, and Sunwing to Cayo Santa Maria, Cuba have also had a positive impact on passenger traffic by increasing the overall number of destinations and by providing passengers with even more travel options.

The Region of Waterloo International Airport is home to 25 businesses that collectively employ over 300 people, together contributing over 86 million dollars annually to the Region’s economy*.
