Waterloo Region – Statistics Canada has ranked the Region of Waterloo International Airport as the 13th busiest Airport in Canada in a report released earlier this month. To view Statistics Canada’s full report please click here.
The Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) is a full service modern facility which supports commercial, corporate and general aviation. The Airport is home to three Canadian Airlines: Bearskin Airlines, who provide five flights each weekday to both Ottawa and Montreal with a reduced weekend schedule; WestJet Airlines, providing non-stop daily service to Calgary with connections to other great cities; and Sunwing Airlines who provide non-stop weekly flights to select destinations in the Caribbean from mid-December through mid-March.
In 2010, 105,561 passengers travelled through the airport, and there were 100,100 aircraft movements (a takeoff or a landing.) Additionally, passenger traffic was up 16 per cent during the first quarter of 2011, and Montreal service has been very strong since it launched two weeks ago.
“Over half a million passengers have used our terminal building since it opened in 2003,” said Chris Wood, General Manager at the Region of Waterloo International Airport. “We continue to work to attract additional airlines and increase the number of non-stop destinations available from Waterloo Region. Airlines have a renewed interest in our community, and we look forward to announcing additional flight options for our passengers."
The Region of Waterloo International Airport is also home to one of Canada’s largest and most experienced flight training institutions the Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre (WWFC) which was originally founded as a flying club in 1932. The WWFC provide programs for students pursuing aviation as a career, and individuals wanting to enjoy flying as a hobby and have partnerships in place with both Conestoga College and the University of Waterloo. The WWFC consistently accounts for more than half of the movements recorded at the Region of Waterloo International Airport. To learn more about WWFC please click here.
