    Need to drive airside for your job?
    You need an Airside Vehicle Operator Permit (AVOP).

    Airside Vehicle Operator Permits (AVOP) are issued by the Region of Waterloo International Airport. An AVOP certifies that a person is trained to operate vehicles safely airside in gate, runway and aircraft taxi areas.

    Note:
    AVOP applicants must prove both a need and right to drive airside.

    How to obtain an AVOP

    1. Determine which type of AVOP you need.
    AVOP Types
    • DA - Restricted Area + Aprons Only (Operate inside restricted area and aprons only).
    • D - Full Airfield, including Restricted Area + Radiotelephone Operator's Certificate. Written and practical test required.

    Non-refundable fee for issuing a new, replacement or renewed AVOP is $50.


    Note: D requires a Restricted Operator's Certificate - Aeronautical. Please contact the Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre at 519-648-2213 to write the test.

    2. Complete the AVOP and Security Awareness Training.
    • Create your online training account.
    • Complete the Security Awareness and the appropriate Airside Vehicle Operators Permit Course (D/A or D).
    • You will be awarded Certificates of Completion, which are both required with your AVOP application.
    3. Complete the AVOP application.

    Complete your Airside Vehicle Operator (AVOP) Application.

     

    Supporting documents:

    • Completed AVOP Application signed by your company’s Signing Authority.
    • Attach a copy of your Restricted Area Identification Card (RAIC) or Company ID.
    • Attach a copy of a Valid provincial driver’s license (Only G2 or higher license holders may hold an AVOP).
    • Attach a copy of your Radio Operator's Certificate - Aeronautical for D AVOP.
    • Attach a passport style photo if sending by email.
    • Attach a copy of your Security Awareness and Airside Vehicle Operator's Permit Certificate.

    Drop off the application and supporting documents at the Information desk, or scan and email to AirportPassControl@regionofwaterloo.ca.

    4. Contact Pass Control to book an AVOP practical exam (Required for D).

    The appointment can be booking through Pass Control. Please provide a minimum one week notice. 

     

    The practical exam includes, but is not limited to:

    • Accurate completion of labelling an airfield map.
    • Airside rules and regulations.
    • Airport familiarization.
    • Lights, signage, and markings knowledge.
    • Proper airfield radio communications.
