Environmental Policy
The Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF), owned and operated by the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, recognizes the environmental impact of airport operations and the importance of fostering resiliency to the effects of a changing climate.
YKF is committed to ensuring that climate action, the clean energy transition and environmental stewardship remains at the forefront of daily operations while preparing for sustainable growth in the region, and to providing leadership and support in the decarbonization of the aviation industry. To effectively manage a clean energy transition, YKF will prioritize energy use reductions and energy efficiencies at the airport.
In 2022, YKF joined the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program, which is the only institutionally endorsed global carbon management certification standard for airports.
Through the ACA program, YKF intends to:
- Monitor and report our annual carbon footprint
- Develop a Carbon Management Plan (CMP) to decarbonize airport operations and development activities
- Demonstrate continual reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
- Develop formal staff training and capacity building programs to advance the airport’s environmental goals
- Develop a Stakeholder Engagement Plan (SEP) to promote wider airport-based emissions reductions from major activities which the airport can guide or influence
- Align carbon reduction targets and clean energy transition commitments with those of the Region of Waterloo
