Climate Change Targets
YKF has identified a long-term target of achieving Net Zero Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 2050. This is in alignment with the Region of Waterloo’s Corporate Climate Action Plan.
During this period of growth and expansion, YKF has also established several short-term commitments to:
- Measure and report our carbon footprint annually through the Airport Carbon Accreditation program.
- Build a future terminal building that is net-zero with Council approval. Design and planning of the future terminal will include on-site renewable energy production.
- Become a leader in supporting sustainable aviation through partnerships with low-carbon aviation fuel providers and the Waterloo Institute of Sustainable Aeronautics.
- Switch 80% of gasoline and diesel vehicles to market-ready zero-emission vehicles by 2030, and install charging infrastructure to support the Region and public’s needs.
- Achieve a 5 – 10% reduction in emissions from natural gas and electricity consumption by 2028 through investment in energy efficiency upgrades in airport-owned buildings.
