Climate Change Progress to Date
YKF has already started investing in energy efficiency and electrification and has begun working with tenants to help them advance their own sustainability goals.
Achievements to date include:
- Certification at Level 1 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program, the only institutionally endorsed global carbon management certification program for airports.
- Established an environmental policy and developed a Decarbonization Action Plan.
- Switched to LED lighting throughout the Airport and installed lighting timers and sensors.
- Funded an electric plane charging station for the Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre, and a charger to support electric ground handling equipment.
- Installed electric vehicle (EV) charging stations within the short-term and value parking lots.
- Coordinated with Grand River Transit to provide shuttle service to connect the airport to the Region’s public transportation network.
- Supported the work of the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics (WISA), working with researchers and students and providing opportunities for testing within an airside environment.
- Updated waste plan to send waste from international flights to the local landfill, instead of transporting it to Toronto.
- Installed meters to monitor water usage for airport facilities.
- Planted over 100 trees within airport property.
