Accessible travel for all: The Region of Waterloo International Airport earns gold certification rating from Rick Hansen Foundation
Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) is excited to announce it has achieved ‘RHF Accessibility Certified Gold,’ the highest certification level under the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification™ (RHFAC) program.
A legacy of Rick Hansen's “Man In Motion World Tour,” which took place over 40 years ago, the Rick Hansen Foundation is committed to a world without barriers. The RHFAC program provides organizations with an understanding of their overall level of meaningful access in the built environment. This is based on the holistic user experience of people with varying disabilities affecting their mobility, vision and hearing as well as neurodiversity. To date, over 2,283 sites across Canada have been rated through the program. YKF now joins the ranks of just over 151 sites that have achieved Accessibility Certified Gold and is one of only four Canadian Airports.
“This achievement is a reflection of our dedication to ensuring accessible travel for all as we continue to expand YKF to meet the needs of our growing community,” said Karen Redman, Chair, Region of Waterloo. “Accessibility is not just a feature; it’s a fundamental right. The improvements made to our airport spaces remove barriers for passengers of all abilities. We are proud to be recognized for our efforts by the Rick Hansen Foundation.”
“The Region of Waterloo International Airport is joining a growing list of Canadian airports who are setting the bar higher for what it means for travellers of all abilities to have meaningful access to a positive travel experience,” said Amanda Basi, Senior Director, Programs, Rick Hansen Foundation. “Congratulations to the Region of Waterloo International Airport for their leadership and commitment to prioritizing the removal of barriers so that all passengers can move with ease throughout their journey.”
