New Scheduled Air Service at the Region of Waterloo International Airport
Request for Proposal (RFP) - P2017-20

Our goal is to secure new air service by awarding routes in a fair and transparent way. Airlines that meet the set criteria will receive up to 24 months protection on un-serviced routes to reduce risk. As the economic benefit to the Region increases, so will the outcome of the scoring formula. Proposals accepted until January 31, 2018.

Why YKF?

  • Diverse local economy - Waterloo Region's unique innovation eco-system produces world-class talent, cutting edge research and goods. From Google to Toyota, COM DEV to Open Text, Sun Life to Manulife, Waterloo Region is one of the best places in the world to do business.
  • Strategic location - YKF is located alongside Canada's superhighway 401, 45 minutes west of Toronto. Over 3 million people live within a one hour drive of the airport. The airport is close enough to draw passengers from Toronto and far enough from the United States to limit leakage.
  • Growing population - Waterloo Region is one of Canada's fastest growing communities. Currently the tenth largest urban area in the country with a population expected to reach 835,000 by 2041.
  • Outstanding educational institutions - Home to the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, and Conestoga College.  Think-tanks including:  the Centre for International Governance; Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics; and, the Institute for Quantum Computing.
  • Facilities, infrastructure and support - YKF is owned and operated by the Regional Municipality of Waterloo who have an AAA credit rating. This allows the airport to secure long term capital financing to make strategic infrastructure investments.
  • Opportunity to increase market share - YKF currently captures only 3.9 per cent of the 2.2 million origin-destination travellers in our primary catchment area. This is due to limited air service.
  • Marketing and community support - YKF's team provide community support including a corporate introduction program. This provides airline executives with access to the largest employers in Waterloo Region.
  • Competitive rates - YKF's fees and charges are 59 percent lower than Toronto's Pearson International Airport.
